Employers Value Speech
Majors
Students who major in Speech learn the importance of communication by exploring the construction, diffusion, analysis, and impact of messages as they occur among individuals, groups, organizations, and cultures in the media age. The concepts and skills of this degree prepare students for a variety of occupations and are useful in the world of communication on a global scale.
The program also supports students interested in the Communication Disorders field. These students major in Speech Communication with an Interdisciplinary Minor in Communication Sciences. The GSU chapter in NSSLHA (National Student Speech Language and Hearing Association) includes undergraduate students and can further prepare them for graduate programs and careers in CSD fields.

Customer Acquisition - Growth Consultant & Advisor
"Two things were on my mind when I started college: “Get a degree that’s useful no matter what I decide to do in life” and “choose a degree that would give me an upper hand in business.” Five years later, I’m happy to say that choosing to pursue communications accomplished both of these things. Studying communication at GSU gave me the soft skills necessary to effectively communicate in my daily life and in my career...
Not only have I been able to convey thoughts clearly to family and friends, but it has allowed me to respectably speak in front of large crowds with confidence and lead teams of professionals in the workplace. Now, more than ever, my communication skills have easily become my most valuable asset. It has allowed me to instill trust in clients that agree to hand over millions of dollars with hopes that I will make the right decisions on their behalf. As a business builder and digital marketer, it’s been essential to use effective communication in our advertising, emails, websites, and pretty much any other messaging that a consumer may see. In college, I couldn’t fathom the impact this degree would have on my career but as I look back on the lectures, essays, and speeches, I’m grateful for every moment that amplified my character. The Communication program at Georgia State will enrich my life for many decades to come."

Assistant to Speech Language Pathologist & Advisor
"I used my Speech Communication degree to continue my education in Communication Sciences and Disorders. The program prepared me not only through an introduction to communication disorders, but also by examining communication across different platforms and social situations. The Speech Communication program has provided me with a diverse and applicable background to becoming a well-rounded speech language pathologist."

Project Manager - Renew Digital & Advisor
"Post-graduation, communication is everything I do. Communicating effectively got me in the door at a lucrative business directly after earning my B.A. from Georgia State. My knowledge of communication theory enabled me to cultivate a stellar career and work my way up to leading management in six short years."

Communications Specialist - ServiceMaster Brands & Advisor
"As a Speech Communications major, I had the opportunity to take a variety of classes that cultivated the skills necessary to succeed in my career. In my current role, a Communications Specialist at ServiceMaster Brands, I am responsible for all internal communications. At GSU, I learned to not only compose messages but deliver them in a way that my target audience can receive them as intended...
The knowledge gained from my coursework inspired me to pursue my Master’s in Corporate Communication Management. If it had not been for all the teachers who transferred their love for communications unto me, I would not have had the enthusiasm to pursue a second degree much less a career in communications."

Senior Account Executive - Deel
"My time at Georgia State in the Speech department prepared me for an incredible career in sales - although I had no idea at the time that's where I'd end up! Specifically, Dr. Ramzy's course on persuasion still holds true to the messaging I do in my role on a daily basis. Learning that people made decisions emotionally, and then their brains justified those decisions with logic, helped me move naturally into a career...
of helping businesses make decisions. Although GSU was, and still is, huge in population, the Comms department felt like a tight-knit group, both in faculty and in classmates."
