Employers Value Nutrition Science Majors
The Lewis College of Nursing and Health Professions offers a bachelor of science degree in Nutrition with concentrations in Nutrition Science and Nutrition and Wellness. The Nutrition Science concentration provides a strong foundation for those interested in positions in applied sciences or for those pursuing pre-professional (medical, dental, occupational therapy, speech pathology and dietetics) studies. Students interested in eventually pursuing Georgia State’s Coordinated Program, which prepares students to become registered dietitian nutritionists, should choose the Nutrition Science concentration. The Nutrition and Wellness concentration prepares students for entry-level careers in the nutrition, health and wellness fields. This program provides students with a well-rounded understanding of the health and nutrition needs of the public over the lifespan and equips students with health communication skills. These skills and this knowledge will help prepare students for positions in nutrition and wellness promotion in government agencies and private industries.

Diabetes Educator - Wellstar Hospital
"I chose nutrition because I wanted to work in healthcare but didn’t want to be a nurse or doctor. My grandma was a dietitian, so nutrition just made sense! I was in the masters-only program at GSU. I chose the program because of the location and because the research opportunities sounded interesting...
My favorite thing about the nutrition program was the staff support. It seemed like all the professors really cared about our success. The classes covered very similar topics to those I took for my bachelor’s degree but with more detail. However, the emphasis on research and interpreting evidence-based data helped even more. It wasn’t something I felt confident in right out of undergrad, but I felt much more comfortable with it after attending GSU. After graduating, I went on to complete my dietetic internship. I initially worked in long term care as a clinical dietitian for one year. Then I worked at Grady as a Clinical Dietitian for about 2.5 years, and I recently started working as a Diabetes Educator with Wellstar Hospital. Start thinking of ways to advocate for the profession and get involved. From widening representation in the healthcare field to expanding diversity to improving pay, we have lots of work to do! Joining Greater Atlanta Dietetic Association (GADA) has been a great way for me to get involved! Plus, our events provide awesome opportunities for networking."
Clinical Research Coordinator - The Emory Hope Clinic
"My decision to study nutrition was primarily driven by my family’s health conditions. Watching them struggle to maintain their health motivated me to pursue a career in nutrition. My favorite thing about the nutrition program was that students were always informed about different scholarships, internships, and job opportunities...
My biggest takeaway: Utilize the professional networking groups and clubs on campus. Joining these organizations can be a great way to get leadership experience, attend conferences, get internships, and network.
Two years after graduating from Georgia State University, I was accepted into the Master of Public Health Program at Rollins School of Public Health- Emory University. Since graduating with my MPH degree, I am working as a clinical research coordinator at the Emory Hope Clinic. Most people assume that you can only work as a dietitian, but there are many other jobs: nutrition consultant, diabetes educator, research assistant, clinical research coordinator, health educator, public health consultant, public health information officer, etc."
Senior Human Milk Technician - Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta
"I was obese from seven years old until my early twenties. I learned about exercise and nutrition by trial and error for years, and developed a better lifestyle from these experiences. I lost over 100 lbs over the course of a few years. I really didn’t become interested in nutrition as a career path until after I hired a personal trainer to help me gain more lean mass...
At the time, I did not know that the trainer was unqualified to offer dietary counseling, and I became underweight, malnourished, tired, weak, and felt sick. I never want anyone to experience what I endured. While my interest in nutrition leans more towards cardiovascular health in pediatrics, especially for children who have heart defects, I can empathize and better understand people who struggle to lose weight or gain weight. The Nutrition, B.S. program holds more weight on its sciences than other programs. The professors all genuinely wanted us to succeed, and were always open to answering any questions. I currently work at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at the Scottish Rite campus as the senior human milk technician. I work alongside our dietitians to calculate and process new feed orders for babies. We human milk techs are responsible for creating the orders, fortifying mom’s milk, and sending them up to our nurses. The field of nutrition is vast. There are careers in not just clinical but community food service, sports nutrition, food science, and research, to name a few. If you know you want to pursue nutrition, but don’t quite know where you’d like to focus your attention, GSU's program introduces many different paths."
