Marketing Professional - Benchling
"Johnny Truong is a marketing professional at Benchling, a life science software company that is accelerating the speed of science. In his current role, he creates and executes marketing initiatives targeting academic scientists...
who could maximize their research productivity with Benchling’s platform. Before Benchling, completed his B.S. in Chemistry at GSU in 2014 and his Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley in 2019. His time at GSU greatly prepared him for graduate school and his current role by introducing him to scientific research, giving him opportunities to hone his oral/written presentation skills, and allowing him to explore diverse research interests. Most of all, his ability to empathize and speak with other scientists makes him a valuable and effective communicator when designing marketing programs."
MD/PhD Candidate - University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and Genetics T32 Trainee
"I earned my bachelors in chemistry (with a concentration in biochemistry) in 2018 and my masters in biophysical chemistry in 2019, both at Georgia State University. I am currently an MD/PhD student at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine...
I truly believe that being an undergraduate student in the Department of Chemistry, as opposed to any other department, was critical in helping me get to where I am today. Beyond just a thorough and in-depth knowledge of chemistry (including strong training in biochemistry and physical chemistry), my degree equipped me with an indispensable set of skills and tools that have helped me get to my current position and which I continue to use every day. These include scientific writing and presentation skills, the ability to think abstractly about problems and make connections between concepts, and the ability to teach others well by explaining concepts in different ways or from multiple perspectives. While I learned most of these skills within the context of learning chemistry (eg, spatial thinking in organic chemistry, abstract mathematical conceptualizations of physical phenomena in physical chemistry, etc.), I have found that these skills are actually fundamental and applicable to almost any problem, task, or job at hand."
Chemist - Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
"The skill I gained from being a Chemistry student at Georgia State University prepared me to be a confident and competent chemist in my field. As a Chemist for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, I use the skills I learned from working in research and teaching labs at GSU...
My critical-thinking, analytical, and presentation skills were honed by the exercises and challenging classes that I took at Georgia State--skills that, to this day, I use extensively. Lastly, the professional and personal relationships I fostered at Georgia State have helped me expand my network, enabling me to get where I am today."
Postdoctoral Scientist - Boehringer Ingelheim
"Signing up to double major in Biology and Chemistry at GSU was an easy decision after I was accepted into the laboratory of Prof. Markus W. Germann. Being right at the interface of Biology, Chemistry, and even Physics, I was excited to learn everything...
My lab mates were exceptionally patient, giving me space and time to learn at my own pace. Over the course of two years as an undergraduate student, I was exposed to a variety of projects and a myriad of techniques. To deepen my skill set, I continued research in the same lab and earned an MS in Biophysical Chemistry. My thesis project was focused on understanding the structure and function of G-Quadruplex-related therapeutics using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance among other techniques. Pivoting my education, I joined Department of Cell Biology at Yale University to earn my PhD in the lab of Prof. James E. Rothman. This experience allowed me to explore a whole new set of techniques and a different way of approaching scientific problems. As a result, my unique and expansive skill set helped me land a postdoctoral scientist position at a large pharmaceutical company called Boehringer Ingelheim. I am proud to be part of an incredible company, which focuses on improving lives of human and animal patients. My current scientific projects rely on a combination of techniques and scientific thinking I learned throughout my entire education."
